National Library Week, April 6–12, is a time to celebrate the many ways libraries bring people together, spark imagination, and support lifelong learning. The community is invited to get drawn in and join the celebration for two special art-themed events on Sunday, April 6.
Visit the library lobby at 1 p.m. for a unique storytelling experience with artist Martina Hahn. In this one-hour interactive painting demonstration, Hahn will bring stories to life on canvas, blending art, literature, and music in a captivating performance. As she paints, she will share engaging narratives, discuss the creative process, and highlight the many services the library offers.
A professional artist and speaker, Hahn is best known for her mesmerizing live painting performances, where she creates stunning works of art in minutes while captivating audiences with her storytelling. Her accomplishments include television features on Classical & Canvas, Good Morning Michigan, and collaborations with the Midland Symphony Orchestra and ArtPrize Grand Rapids. In 2023, she received LUX Life Magazine’s Award of Educational Excellence as the “Most Inspiring International Curriculum Enriching Art Event Facilitator.”
Following Hahn’s presentation, join artist Patrick Wise at 2 p.m. in the lower level classroom for an hour-long drawing workshop. Open to most ages, this hands-on session welcomes families and art enthusiasts alike. There is no registration required, but seating may be limited.
A representational painter with a deep connection to landscapes, people, and nature, Wise draws inspiration from the beauty of northern Michigan and his upbringing in Petoskey. An award-winning artist and college professor, he holds a Master of Arts from Wayne State University and continues to create, capturing emotion and place through his work.
"Martina Hahn’s unique blend of storytelling and painting is truly mesmerizing—it's storytelling like you've never seen before. We are thrilled to bring this experience during National Library Week, a time to celebrate creativity, lifelong learning, and the many ways libraries inspire our community,” said Jodi Haven, public services librarian. “This program, along with Patrick Wise’s drawing workshop, highlights how libraries are not just about books—they're about experiences that nurture knowledge, drive discovery, and connect community."
Whatever draws you in, the library has something for everyone. The Petoskey District Library provides many unique programs and services, such as free Wi-Fi, digital collections, private meeting rooms, a makerspace, children’s story time and more, ensuring that everyone has access to resources that educate, inspire, and connect.
First celebrated in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country each April.
