The Library Board of Trustees (Board) is made up of five residents of the City of Petoskey all appointed by the Mayor. The Board is governed by its bylaws. The Board is responsible for hiring the director, creating policies, and overseeing the budget. Members serve without compensation. For more information, see the Board of Trustees Job Description.
Beginning in 2022, the Library Board of Trustees added a student, non-voting member to their board. Students in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, who live in the library's service area (City of Petoskey, the townships of Bear Creek, Little Traverse, Resort, or Springvale) are eligible to apply.

The Board meets at 5:00pm on the fourth Thursday of each month except for the November meeting which is held the Tuesday prior to the fourth Thursday. There is no meeting in December. Meetings are held in the lower level Classroom of the Library, 500 E Mitchell St unless otherwise noted.
