New Building Update
In August 2000, residents of the City of Petoskey approved a millage to finance construction and maintenance of a new library. The Library Commission hired local architects, Jonathan Lee Architects, Richard Neumann, Nick White and Associates to design the building and the construction project was awarded to Clark Construction, another local business. Ground breaking occurred on July 7, 2003. Work on the project continues to be on schedule, with an expected opening date for the new library in November of 2004.

Waiting is the hardest part!
Looking up the Grand Staircase opening; It'll be FABULOUS!
Our librarians are standing in the midst of what will
become our new 900 square foot Teen Room. The computer room will eventually flesh out off to the left.
You are looking west toward the Main Entrance and Circulation Desk (to the right)
This is, again, the ground floor. The New Book Area will be immediately to the left, with periodicals and reading areas straight ahead to the right and the left. The space framed by the steel columns will be open all the way up through the cupola.
Now you're looking at the Children's Program Room at the south end of the old building (ground floor).
In front of you, the "Lighthouse" interior looking up to the "Lighthouse" cupola
Behind you is the Grand Staircase, looking down...

COME WITH US ON A TOUR OF THE INSIDE!
Yes, things seem to have stopped during the winter months. But, we have been assured that enough is going on inside that we be able to open in the fall. On Thursday, March 18, your library staff took a little tour, courtesy of the Clark Construction staff. Come along with us and see a bit of the inside too.... The first stop is the upstairs reference room on the second floor, looking to the north.

Building Project Update - July 2003
A groundbreaking ceremony was held July 7, 2003 to celebrate the beginning of renovation and addition to the former Bell Building across Mitchell Street from the present library. With the theme "From the past into the Future" the occasion marked the end of the preliminary work. An honorary silver shovel, dedicated to the Citizens of Petoskey for making the expansion achievable, was used by the Mayor, Ms. Kate Marshall. Bids are being awarded for foundation and other project components. Asbestos and lead paint removal work in the building has been completed. The project has started with completion to be 18 to 24 months away.
